Mamoru-kun is a doll in the shape of a police officer made to protect traffic safety in Miyako Island,Idol-like presence on Miyako IslandAs of March 2024, there are a total of 21 statues—20 of Mamoru-kun and one of his younger sister, Maruko-chan—standing on Miyako Island and the surrounding islands.

(1) Miyakojima Mamoru-kun
The first one we will introduce is the "first generation" Mamoru-kun.
The first Mamoru-kun was installed in the Miyakojima Police Station.
It all began in 1996 (Heisei 8) when the Miyako Island District Traffic Safety Association installed five statues, and its “birthday” is set as August 5, Heisei 3 (1991).
He is employed by the Miyakojima District Safety Association and the Traffic Division of the Miyakojima Police Station, holding the rank of Senior Police Officer with the status of a Superintendent. (2) Miyakojima Koji-kun
Koji-kun is on standing guard duty in Nishihara, and is now working alone, as the impactful seers that once stood next to him are no longer there.
When traveling north on Route 83 from Taira, it can be found at the intersection at the entrance to the Nishihara area.
Miyakojima Hitoshi-kun
Hitoshi-kun is currently working standing guard at the airport south intersection.
It used to stand at the Hotel Rising Sun intersection, but now it watches over the busy area around the airport.
4) Susumu Miyakojima
Susumu works in Karimata, and you can meet him along Prefectural Route 230, which runs north from Taira toward Ikemajima.
They are easy to spot because they are on a straight road with good visibility!

⑤ Maruko-chan from Miyako Island
Maruko-chan is Mamoru-kun's only younger sister.
Standing guard with Miyakojima Mamoru-kun in front of the entrance of Miyakojima Police Station.
Actually, Mamoru and Maruko were issued special resident certificates by Miyakojima City in January 2012, so they are officially recognized as residents of Miyakojima.
6) Miyakojima Ryozo-kun
Ryozo is on duty at the intersection of Route 78 in Higashi Nakasone toward the airport.
You can see him working along the left turn lane of the airport line from the direction of Taira.
Do not park and take pictures in this area as it is very busy near the airport.
7) Miyakojima toshio-kun
Toshio-kun works standing guard at the entrance to the athletic field where there is a lot of traffic.
It serves as a watchdog for sports and road safety.
8) Miyakojima Kazuki-kun
Kazuki is standing guard near the main gate of Shimoji Elementary School.
It is not a busy intersection, but it is probably worked by many elementary and middle schools.
On National Route 390 heading from the city center toward Shimoji, look for the sign for Shimoji Elementary School, turn there, and continue for a short distance to reach the destination.

Miyakojima Izuru-kun
Izuru-kun is currently working standing guard at the entrance of Ueno.
It used to stand in front of Ueno Elementary School.
10) Masao Miyakojima-kun
Masao is currently keeping an eye on traffic safety at the three-way intersection near the German Cultural Village.

(11) Miyakojima Kiyoshi-kun
Kiyoshi has a history of being injured during a typhoon and returning to action after recovering.
I am currently on duty on Irabu Island.
⑫Masakatsu Miyakojima
Masakatsu-kun helps keep children safe as they walk to and from school near Nishijo Elementary School (near the Nishinishi bus stop in Shirobe).
⑬Miyakojima Tetsuya-kun
Tetsuya is standing guard just before the Kurema Bridge from Miyakojima Island.
On the way from Taira City to Kurima Island, you’ll come across this spot just before the Kurima Bridge. With fields stretching out behind Tetsuya, it’s a great spot for photos.

⑭Miyakojima Junki-kun
Today, Irabu Island is accessible by car via the Irabu Bridge, but Junki-kun has been on duty on Irabu Island since before the bridge was built.

(15) Miyakojima Takuma-kun
Takuma-kun has been transferred from the entrance of Utopia Farm to the front of Miyako Densui, and is now watching over the busy intersection.
⑯ Atsushi Miyakojima-kun
Atsushi used to be on foot patrol at the German Village intersection, which overlooks the ocean, but he is now keeping watch in front of Ueno Elementary School.
⑰Miyakojima Sorinokunin
Since Itaru works inside the security guard post at Miyako Airport (indoors), he’s the first person you’ll meet when you visit Miyako Island.

⑱Miyakojima Isao-kun
Isao-kun went south from the mid-breakfast store,At Shimosatozoe on the Tomori LineI work standing duty.
It was originally stationed in front of the Oura Community Center, but after being relocated to various spots—including in front of Matsuda Orthopedic Clinic in Taira-Kubai—it now stands at its current location, watching over the safety of the community following its restoration.
(19) Takaya-kun, Miyakojima
Takaya has been transferred from the foot of the Irabu Bridge to Ikemajima. Here’s Mamoru for the first time on Ikemajima!
⑳宮古島つよし君
Tsuyoshi is the only one of the Mamoru brothers who is on duty on Tarama Island.
You can see it at the intersection near the exit of Tarama Airport, which is served by two round-trip flights per day operated by RAC (Ryukyu Air Commuter) from Miyako Airport.
You can meet them on the way out of the airport to the village!
21 Miyakojima Mitsuo-kun
Mitsuo has returned to duty in front of the Taira Police Box. He was injured during a typhoon in 2003 and had been on medical leave for many years, but in September 2020, he returned to duty for the first time in 17 years.
