Hello everyone! There are many outlying islands surrounding Miyakojima. Among them, Irabu Island, Ikema Island, and Kurima Island have large bridges from Miyako Island to each other, and the land route is well maintained, so you can easily visit these islands for sightseeing.

This article introduces the three major bridges on Miyako Island: Irabu Ohashi, Ikema Ohashi, and Kushima Ohashi!

How to get to Irabu Bridge

    伊良部大橋

I would like to introduce the access to the Irabu Bridge. To get to the Irabu Bridge, first fly to Miyako Airport. From there, take the Miyako Kyoei Bus (Niisato-Miyakuni Line) to Hirara Port. From there, transfer to the Kyowa Bus.

For those who drive a car, we recommend renting a car in Miyako Island. It is very pleasant to drive through the "Irabu Ohashi Bridge" in an exhilarating way.

    Irabu Bridge Parking Lot

    伊良部大橋

There is a space in the middle of the bridge where cars can park, but it is a space for emergency vehicles to stop, so parking is prohibited except in an emergency. However, there are spaces at both ends of the Irabu Bridge where at least five cars can be parked. There are spaces for at least five cars at each end of the Irabu Bridge, which are crowded with people who park their cars there to take pictures and eat at the kitchen cars.

At the entrance on the Miyako Island side, there is a store called "Hashi no Eki Nmya~chi" where there is also a small parking lot. Beyond that is the entrance to the Irabu Bridge. There is a little space at the entrance of the bridge, so you can take pictures safely!

    History of the Irabu Bridge

    伊良部大橋

Construction of the Irabu Bridge was originally scheduled to be completed in March 2013 and started in 2006. In 2007, the following year, wind tunnel tests conducted by the Wind Resistance Study Committee revealed durability problems, and as a result of reconsideration, the bridge was replaced with a steel slab box girder bridge in 2008. As a result of the reconsideration and testing, the project was delayed one year from the original schedule.

In addition, the large hoist vessel erecting the center span of the main navigation channel section returned to port in Hyogo Prefecture to avoid the effects of a typhoon, and as a result, the project was not completed until January 2015.

Low and high tides at Irabu Bridge

    伊良部大橋

The sea around Miyako Island, including the Irabu Bridge, changes dramatically between low and high tides. At high tide, the depth of the water makes the sea a beautiful shimmering emerald green. At low tide, the coral reefs and white sands on the ocean floor can be clearly seen, and the water is shallower, so the sea is a pale cobalt blue color.

Both are beautiful sights, so please visit at both low and high tide to see the various expressions of Miyako blue. It is convenient to check the tide level from the link below!

How to enjoy the Irabu Bridge

    伊良部大橋

The Irabu Bridge is a 3,540-meter-long bridge connecting Irabu Island and Miyako Island. Miyako Island is an island formed by uplifted coral, and is surrounded by a cluster of coral formations, including the largest table coral in Japan. The total length of the bridge is therefore also "3540 m (Sango-no-shima)," a play on the word "sango-no-shima.

With the construction of this bridge, access to Irabu Island and Shimoji Island became easier, attracting many tourists. It is the longest of the three main bridges on Miyako Island and offers a beautiful sunset view as you drive along. On the Irabu Island side, you may even see sea turtles, so you may want to look for them.

The Irabu Bridge has a parking lot that can accommodate at least five cars on both the Miyako and Irabu Island sides. Kitchen cars are parked here and meals are sold. From the rooftop of this Hashi no Eki Nmyaachi, there is a superb view of the Irabu Bridge. Visitors can climb up to the rooftop by asking the store staff, and are free to do so even outside of business hours.

Especially the collaboration of the sunset and the Irabu Bridge is a spectacular view itself. It is one of the standard and indispensable places for a spectacular view.

Activities near Irabu Bridge (1) Parasailing

    宮古島のパラセーリング

Near the Irabu Bridge, you can also experience parasailing. Parasailing is a type of marine activity in which a circular parachute is pulled by a motorboat and flown over the ocean like a tako-age. While flying through the clear blue sky of Miyako Island, you can look down on the beautiful, crystal-clear ocean below. The 360-degree panoramic ocean view while flying about 50 meters above the sea is sure to impress.

Activities near Irabu Bridge (2) Blue Cave

    宮古島の青の洞窟

Irabu Island is home to the Blue Cave. The Blue Cave is an underwater cave formed by holes in uplifted coral reefs and limestone rocks caused by seawater erosion. The name "Blue Cave" is derived from the blue glow of the cave's interior caused by the reflection of sunlight on the surface of the sea and the topography of the cave. The caves are located overseas in Italy, and in Okinawa on Okinawa Island, Irabu Island, and Yonaguni Island.

The Blue Cave on Irabu Island has only one entrance, which allows sunlight to enter the cave, making it glow a deep blue color. When the weather is bad, the sunlight is weaker and there is less reflected light, so it is recommended to visit on a sunny day to get the best view. Coral reefs grow in clusters around the cave, which is also home to a large number of tropical fish. You can also see schools of fish in the caves. Please enjoy a fantastic experience at the Blue Cave, the unexplored region of Miyako Island!

Activities near Irabu Bridge (3) Yaebise Snorkeling

    八重干瀬

    池間大橋

As introduced for the Irabu Bridge, the sea around Miyakojima changes drastically depending on the time of low and high tides. The sea around the Ikema Ohashi Bridge is no exception. At high tide, the sea is emerald green, but when the tide recedes, the white sand seen through the clear cobalt blue sea is very beautiful. It is a very beautiful sea, but the waters around the Ikema Ohashi Bridge are very fast-flowing, so never swim in them.

How to enjoy Ikema Ohashi Bridge

    池間大橋

At Ikema Ohashi Bridge, the best thing to do is to enjoy the spectacle that can be seen from there. The clear emerald green Miyako blue is so beautiful. It is easy to fall in love with it while driving, but do not drive blindly, and park securely before enjoying the spectacular view!

Low and high tides at the Kuruma Bridge

    来間大橋

Not only the Kurema Bridge, but also other bridges change the view of the sea between low and high tides, but the sea seen from the Kurema Bridge is especially special. The tidal current in the strait between Miyakojima and Kurima Island is very fast, and the sea water circulates actively. As a result, the clarity of the sea is exceptionally high.

The moderately deep water creates a gradation of blue colors that attracts the viewer. The ebb and flow of the tide creates depth and richness in the blue hues. It is no exaggeration to say that the color of the sea is truly absorbing. It is attractive at both low and high tide, so be sure to visit at the right time.

How to enjoy the Kuruma Ohashi Bridge

    来間大橋

Here are some ways to enjoy the Kurema Ohashi Bridge. There is an observation deck in the middle of the walkway that is perfect for taking a break. There are stools near the viewing space, so you can sit and enjoy the spectacular view all to yourself.

Near the stool is a "twilight Shisa," a hidden gem of Miyako Island. Its appearance looks as if it is twilighting in the blue sea of Miyako Island, hence the name "Dusk Shisa. As there is a no-parking sign on the Kurema Ohashi Bridge, please walk or ride a bicycle when looking for the "Dusk Shisa. If you visit the Kurima Ohashi Bridge, please look for it!

Some bridges are the longest toll-free bridges in Japan, others have different impressions depending on the side of the island they connect, and still others boast the beauty of Okinawa. Some bridges can be enjoyed by driving, walking, or biking, so when you come to Miyakojima, please enjoy the view from the bridges that connect to each island.

    Irabu Bridge

    伊良部大橋

It is the longest bridge in Japan that can be crossed free of charge at 3,540 meters. There are many scenic spots on the Irabu Bridge, such as "Island's Station Nmya~chi Rooftop" and "Nagayama Beach." It is also the most Instagram-worthy spot on Miyako Island.
