About Diving on Tarama Island
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Tarama Island is home to the island’s only diving shop, “Kyodo Marine Service JAWS II.” It’s common to make a reservation in advance by phone or other means and sign up primarily for recreational diving. Introductory diving sessions are also available, but since they may not always be offered, we recommend checking in advance.
While you can enjoy diving on Tarama Island year-round, fall through winter is recommended if you prioritize water clarity, and summer is best if you prefer comfortable water temperatures. Since summer—the typhoon season—is prone to weather disruptions, be sure to plan your trip with plenty of flexibility.
You can reach Tarama Island in about 20 minutes by RAC (Ryukyu Air Commuter) flight from Miyako Airport, or in about 2 hours by ferry from Hirara Port. Since ferry service may be canceled due to weather conditions, it’s a good idea to check the schedule in advance.
