Miyako Island is full of attractions that can be enjoyed regardless of the season. However, you will not have a comfortable trip if you do not pay attention to what you wear and what you bring. In this issue, we will introduce recommended clothing and events for each season, as well as activities that you should definitely participate in.

    What is Miyako Island?

    宮古島のサンライズスポット

Miyakojima Island is located south of the main island of Okinawa and is served by regular flights from Tokyo and Fukuoka. In 2019, Shimojishima Airport was renovated for civilian use, making it an even easier resort to get to.

    Miyako Island Weather

    宮古島の春の海

The weather on Miyako Island does not fall below 0 degrees Celsius like in Honshu, and the maximum temperature can reach 20 degrees Celsius even in winter. On the other hand, the weather tends to be unstable around summer, which is considered the best season, due to typhoons and the rainy season, so you must check the weather forecast carefully. If you are concerned about the weather, we recommend springtime from April to May, when it is easier to spend time.

Cost of Trip to Miyako Island

    宮古島の春の飛行機

The cost of Miyako Island varies greatly between the best season and other seasons. For example, airfare can be reduced to less than 10,000 yen by using LCC. However, during the best seasons, such as summer and Golden Week, prices rise sharply and reservations fill up quickly.

The same applies to car rentals, with special rates during summer vacation and Golden Week. Hotels can be inexpensive by staying at minshuku or guesthouses. If you want to relax, book a more expensive resort hotel.

This is how to play in spring in Miyako Island! Information & recommended activities you should know in advance!

    Spring Weather in Miyako Island

Sunny days increase more than in winter, and the temperature rises accordingly; by May, the weather is summer-like, with highs sometimes reaching 27°C (81°F). However, in late May, the rainy season begins. Precipitation increases as the rainy season approaches in June, so if you are concerned about the weather, try to go sightseeing in March or April.

    Spring Clothing in Miyako Island

When visiting Miyakojima in the spring, we recommend wearing cooler clothing such as short sleeves and a light cloak. Especially when it is hot outside, the air conditioner may be set low indoors, and short sleeves may make it seem cold inside. For this reason, it is a good idea to have a small cloak.

Also, be sure to prepare a hat and sunglasses to protect against ultraviolet rays. Since the amount of ultraviolet rays is higher than in Honshu, it is recommended to prepare even in spring when the temperature is not that high.

    Spring Events in Miyako Island

In May, a traditional event called Hurley is held. A number of fancy boats called kareyu-bune are prepared and a race is held. Originally, this event was held to pray for a good catch of fish, but now it has become a representative event of Ishigaki Island.
